Honey Report: Meet Alana: Sarasota Honey Company’s Pirate Beehive

At Sarasota Honey Company, we’ve learned that every beehive has its own personality, and Alana is truly one of a kind. She's not just a hive... she's our pirate hive.

Why the pirate nickname? Because Alana defies the odds. Even when blossoms are few and far between, she continues to bring in honey like clockwork. While most hives slow down once they’ve gathered enough nectar or bloom is over/died for the season, Alana just keeps going. There’s never enough liquid gold (honey) for this girl—just like there’s never enough treasure to satisfy a true pirate.

Some hives are known for “robbing,” which means raiding weaker colonies for their stores of honey and pollen. Alana doesn’t rob exactly... she pirates—bold, strategic, and wildly productive. Though she may be a little ruthless when it comes to neighboring hives, she’s one of our top producers—and always incredibly sweet with our team. She’s Alma’s wild child, ever endearing and enduring.

So it came as no surprise that Alana was the first to produce honeycomb for the 2025 season.

Her honey? Light, golden, and absolutely delicious. Now Available: Alana’s Chunk Honey – First Harvest of 2025!

You can now get your hands on a jar of Alana’s chunk honey, straight from her hardworking hive. It’s the very first harvest of the season, and it’s as special as she is.

For Mother’s Day: A Gift From One Wild Child to Another

If you were your mom’s wild child, why not give her a gift from ours? A jar of Alana’s chunk honey makes a sweet (and cheeky) treat for Mother’s Day—perfect for the mom who always loved your free spirit.

Honey Report: A Honey Shortage, a Sticky Situation, and a Sweet Summer Ahead

As many of you know, Sarasota Honey Company has been through a whirlwind of challenges over the past year—from hurricanes Helene and Melton to a tough hive recovery season. One of the lingering impacts we’re now managing is a significant drop in our honey harvest.

Hurricane Melton hit us hard, cutting our 2024 honey production nearly in half. That means we’ve only been able to harvest about 50% of what we typically would. Because of this, we’re having to get creative with how we bottle and distribute our honey.

Normally, we “graduate” a honey into smaller jars once we notice supply running low and a new honey is coming in with abundance. This allows us to keep at least one honey—other than our signature Allergy Blend—available in the larger jars.

But this year, we’ve found ourselves in a sticky situation: we have shortages of both our Mainland and Coastal honeys, and no new harvest has yet reached the abundance we rely on. That’s why, for now, you’ll find our Mainland honey only in smaller jars.

Thankfully, there’s a bright spot: the bees are now bringing in fresh Coastal nectar—that unique, delicate source of honey gathered in the early summer months from Siesta Key to Anna Maria Island. While it’s not yet honey (the nectar still needs time to be processed and cured by the bees), it’s a strong sign of what’s to come.

In the meantime, we’ve decided to start bottling the last of our existing Coastal Honey into the larger jars, trusting the bees will continue their work and that new Coastal Honey will be ready soon.

We’re hopeful, grateful, and doing everything we can to keep your favorite local honeys on your shelves. Thank you for standing with us—and for supporting our bees through every twist and turn.
